Dr. SHAKIRA NOVA :
How many lives travel in the path of life on the way to the moving time of the great age ! Everyone’s life is like a Big Novel. And Each of its turns is the last paragraph of each Life-Chapter. The Great Persona of Bangladesh that I am highlighting here is the famous Dr Syeda Shakira Reza Nova. Dr. Shakira Nova is an iconic lady of Bangladesh. She is an idol and inspiration to the women. Dr. Nova a person of brilliance elegance, outstanding talents with a fascinating personality. She wishes the girls to be advanced similar to the boys equally, as she works for their equality and equity as a health and rights activist. Nova is a doctor by professon. At present she is doing her job in a world class Medical Consultation Center Concord Diagnostics & Molecular Lab as a Consultant Endocrinologist. She did MBBS from Rangpur Medical College. Just after completion of MBBS degree she did Masters of Public Health with major in Reproductive and Child Health from Philippines. After that she did another Masters in Public Health with major in Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) from California, USA. She contributed a lot in public health sector both at home and abroad. She worked with USAID, DFID, SIDA in Bangladesh and held International Position “Technical support Specialist” abroad. That was a Project of London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in collaboration with Ministry of Public Health, Kabul, Afghanistan. After completion of postgraduate course and training in Endocrinology from BIRDEM and Bangladesh University of Professionals she started working as a consultant Endocrinologist. She has also completed Fellowship in Family Medicine from Bangladesh College of General Practitioners accredited from MRCGP, UK. She has completed Diploma course in Asthma jointly oganized by icddr,b and Education for Health (EfH), UK. She has long experiences of “Imparting Training” on Quality Assurance and Quality of Care in Reproductive Health in clinical settings at various Public Hospitals of Bangladesh (DMC, SSMC, CMC, RpMC, RMC, KMC etc.). She is a former Trainer of icddr,b and guest Trainer of NIPORT.
In sports also Dr. Sakira Nova’s contribution is significant. She is the pioneer female Sports Medicine Expert in Bangladesh certified by International Olympic Committee. As part of her activities to ensure the health safety of players she has taken the lead and contributed historically the best. Dr. Nova has been prominently involved with the government of Bangladesh for consequtive 5 years. and playing a significant role in contributing to the various aspects through association with International Special Olympics. It should be mentioned here that she worked in this arena voluntarily, totally without salary. She was the first female doctor worked as a member of the medical subcommittee of Bangladesh Olympic Association. She was the first female doctor in Bangladesh selected by Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) for Sports Medicine Course under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission & Olympic Solidarity. And thus, she is the first certified female Sports Medicine Expert in Bangladesh. She was the first female sports physician and the member of the medical subcommittee of Bangladesh Football Federation. She sincerely served there as the first female Medical Officer. She was the first female sports physician and the member of the executive committee of Bangladesh Women’s Sports Federation. It was reputedly organized by Women Sports Complex, government of Bangladesh. She was actively involved in various national and international tournaments and camps. She performed the health checkup, medical treatment and provided fitness certificates to both female and male players accordingly. In 2006, she was only the female sports medicine expert selected by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. She was responsible for health checkup, medical treatment and to provide fitness certificates to all the female contestants participated in the “South Asian Games 2006” held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In that competition, all the female players received continuous health care services, including comprehensive health monitoring and immediate medical care. As a Bangladesh’s first and only the female sports team physician, she brought back appreciation, image, and good will for Bangladesh through participating South Asian Games in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 2006. In 2006, the “AFC under 19 Qualifier Round” for female footballers held in Delhi, India, Nova directly provided medical services at the field and offered continuous health monitoring and immediate necessary medical care to the players. She did the same in Kolkata, India at the ” Good Will Visit” Event . As a female sports physician, she gained recognition of her tremendous support in Kolkata, India. And she was acclaimed by the West Bengal State Sports Council, India for her successful performance. She earned name and fame for her continued remarkable efforts that she contributed. Dr. Nova was the first female sports physician of Bangladesh “Kho Kho Federation.” And she was elected as a member of the executive committee through vote and served the foundation for consequtive 5 years. Besides these, she also conducted sessions as a “Speaker” in “Sports Commentary, Presentation and Journalism Course 2012” organized by Sports Vision Ltd and ATN Bangla TV Channel. Letter of appreciation handed over to her by former Education Minister at that event. She wrote on health issues of female athletes in sports, health and life style magazine “Sports Vision” for raising awareness among people. She was also the anchor of the regular weekly sports magazine program “Krira Digonto” aired on government TV channel “Bangladesh Television”.
Dr. Shakira Nova is also involved in social work. She is holding an important postiion “Club Secratory” at Rotary Club Baridhara Central. As a Rotarian PHF , she has been regularly supporting the poor and needy people of the country. She also worked on adolescent reproductive health. She writes regularly in the mainstream newspapers on women empowerment, women’s reproductive health & rights (SRHR), non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among other issues. A daily newspaper in Kathmandu, Nepal: “The Himalayan” published news about Nova’s extraordinary contribution and accomplishments in women and girls’ reproductive health in South Asian countries. She has been contributing as the Brand Ambassador of Youth Change Society Bangladesh(YCSBD).
In personal life , Dr. Nova is the mother of two sons. Her artistic personality and versatile talents make her unique. Her poetry book “Women Who Undefeated” was published in 2025 Amar Ekushey Book Fair. Dr. Nova has joined as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from 1st January 2025 to Telelink Group , that IT Business Organization is keeping a significant contribution to the economy of Bangladesh. In parallel, she continues to provide medical services, works in the literary and cultural world.
There are some people in the world who are born to give good deeds to the society. Their activity is so strong and mature that they live in the society as a followable character. Dr. Nova is a work-warrior in her own life. A doctor, researcher, social worker, writer, singer, reciter, TV anchor. She has received many awards at home and abroad for her Versatile talents and activities. Taking care of all the responsibilities of the family on one side, social responsibility and intellectual mindful travel in life on the other side – Dr. Nova has been working in all directions with well-versed skills.
